What is the white powder?

Hurumanu - What is that white powder?

Today you will be a Forensic Chemist.
A bag of white powder has been confiscated by airport customs.  You need to find out what white powder it is?

Aim: To learn about the makeup of different white powders.

There are a number of different white powders in our everyday life. Some of these are harmful and others are not. Test the four white powders listed to see which one has been found at the airport.

Here are some examples of everyday kitchen white powders.

Flour, Cornflour, Sugar, Salt, Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Icing Sugar, Tartaric Acid

Citric Acid, Gluten Free Flour

You will be given a small amount of 4 white powders on your cardboard. On the black cardboard using a magnifying glass look at the powders.
Look at them under your magnifying glass and record what you see.

These are the four powders we will be using. Upload a photo of each powder.

1.  Cornflour
2.  Baking Soda
3.  Salt
4.  Sugar

Before you add the iodine, vinegar or water you will need to divide each powder into 3.

Materials

1.  Paper
2. Magnifying glasses
3. Pen or finger

Steps

1.Divide your paper into four sections
2. Put the powders into the four different sections
3. Divide each powder into three sections
4. Then pour the three different chemicals
5. Record the reactions
Findings:
In our testing, we know for a fact that they all have different reactions.

Sugar
Salt
Baking Soda
Cornflour
Appearance
Changes into a different colour
DIfferent colours
Different Colour
Changed Colour
Texture
Thin liquid
Turned straight black
Turned into a yellow like colour
Stiff a solid
Smell
It smells really bad.
Smells like a recipe cake when you use mouldy ingredients
Smells so bad
No one likes the smell
Iodine
Turned really black
Turned black an absorbed the liquid
Made a yellow like colour and is absorbed the liquid.
Turned really stiff
Water
Absorbed

Absorbed
(Nothing)
Floated on top of the powder.
Turned into a thick liquid
Vinegar
Create a tiny amount of bubbles
Absorbed
(Nothing)
Did a huge amount of bubbles, it was a good reaction
It floated on top of the powder
Conclusion:
In conclusion, I would like to say that it has been fun recording my findings in our forensics experiment.  In the end, this has been great fun I would love to do this again.   I recommend this when you are at home.  There is a high chance of you having these ingredients but probably not the iodine. What do you think the white powder was?

Home Chemistry - Aerodynamics

FLIGHT

Aim: To learn about flight and aerodynamics.

  • In your groups of 3, you will make a paper plane and measure its distance and behaviour.
  • In groups of 3, you will make a water rocket and record its distance and behaviour.
Image result for flight forces

Definition: If an object is an aerodynamics that means it is able to move through the air.

4 forces of flight:
  1. Thrust: Produces, Balances the Drag.
  2. Drag: makes the Weight slow down the moving item/object.
  3. Lift: Lift is basically what it says it helps it move upward
  4. Gravity: Gravity is a force that pulls you down to earth. If there was no gravity we would be floating. (Anti Gravity)

Paper Plane:

Material: Piece of Paper

1. Paper
2. Paper clip

Steps:

  1. Fold Lengths
  2. Fold Again
  3. Fold Corners
Findings:

Plane Type
Distance
Behaviour
Normal
5m
Straight line
Ailerons
3m
Swoops To Side
Paper clip
5m
Straight

Conclusion:
Aerodynamics is a very interesting and fun thing to see and create. Our objective was to make it glide across and I think that I have completed at a very high standard. In conclusion, I would have to say that this was a great experience and I would make more paper planes.

Rainbow Paper

Rainbow Paper

Aim: To separate colours by using the process of chromatography.

This is my end result.

Materials:

  1. Chromatography Filter Paper

  2. Plastic cup

  3. Water based felt paper

  4. Ruler

  5. Pencil for marking

Process:

Step 1:  Firstly we selected a group containing 3 member suitable for this experiment.

We then had to get a Chromatography Filter Paper, Ruler, Water based felt pen and a Pencil

Step 2:  Secondly, On the Chromatography Filter paper we had to rule a line from the bottom of the paper 1 cm going up.

Step 3:  After that we had to put 2 dots on the pencil marking, my group and I we used Green and Purple coloured Water Based Felt Paper.

Step 4: Then we had to get a clear plastic cup and place the piece of Chromatography Filter Paper, with the paper the side that has the markings and dots has to face downwards or into the bottom of the plastic cup, but the rest of the paper hanging out of the Plastic Cup you can gently fold that on the outside of the Plastic Cup.

Step 5: After that we have to give or show one of the teachers our Plastic cups with our Chromatography paper and then the teacher will pour a small amount of water into your Plastic Cup.

Step 6: Finally, after the water is inside the Plastic Cup, then you will see a change of colours showing up on the Chromatography Filter Paper, On our paper we noticed that we’ve made two different colours which were Pink and Blue, also we noticed that the colours have traveled.

Conclusion: What have I learnt from this experiment?

Today I learnt that there are more than one colour in the felts. The end result looks so cool and I enjoy it heaps. From this I think that science is starting to interest me. I hope to do this again thank you and bye.

Home Chemistry intro

We had to talk about the different chemicals we have at home.  We had to clarify if it was a Solid/Liquid/Gas.  Hope you like it:
Home Chemistry: Introduction

Aim: To learn the names of 10 household chemicals, their elements, and
reactions with other substances.

Rugby Academy

For this term, on Wednesdays,  my friends and I have been going to rugby academy.  We do skills and play games.  It has been fun doing these activities because I get the opportunity to show my passion at school.  We also have the opportunity to teach others the sport.  I feel amazing and awesome when I do heaps of fit stuff because I know I am very unfit so it is the opportunity to get fit.   We also get to play games that we do at our own training.

I hope to do more of this in the future and hope to have more kids come and enjoy the sport as much as I do.  Have a great day and please comment.

Learning stories

Here is my Learning Story:

Last week we started on our learning stories, we did P.E and Movie Magic. We basically had to write about what we did this term in hurumanu. In P.E or playback, I wrote about what games we played and also had some cool photos of me. We also had to write about how we felt when we played our games. I wrote that I could have had many more improvements to myself so that I would be able to help others and be more focused on sport.

Empathy

Empathy to us means to be able to fill someone else's shoes and know what they are feeling.  We show empathy by helping to motivate and encourage others to feel good about themselves.  I also think that empathy is a great way to make someone feel good about themselves.

This is my acrostic poem about EMPATHY:

Emotion
Motivate others to feel good about themselves
Putting yourself into someone else's shoes
Allowing your friends to talk to you
Talking to others
Honesty
