2020 Review

This year has been one of the wildest years I have experienced.  Although there are a lot of things that I could discuss with you I will be narrowing it down to things that happen in my school life.  This includes the events, sports, and what I was up to in lockdown (Covid - 19).

Let's start off with events that happened this year, so my school held a couple events but I will only talk about two of the Market Day.   Let's start with market day,  what is the market day? Market day is when our school create mini-companies and sell various products.  These small groups can also hold mini carnival games.  The point of this is to have the most amount of money.  My group did some work on cutting glass bottles and selling them as cups.  Something sustainable that can help the community.  Our plan didn't work because we accidentally dropped all of the cups sadly shattering them on the ground.  Although the event itself was fun my favourite part was sports in school...

I am a very sporty person so when it comes to competing in school vs school I am more than happy to compete.  I was in a couple sports events such as Volleyball, Ki O Rahi and lit, just to name a few.  My favourite was volleyball,  this was simply because my team won the whole comp undefeated.  I appreciate a good team and was very grateful to compete with my team taking out all competition.  Now, what I despise about this year... Lockdown.

One word 'Lockdown,' this year was specifically different for me because of Lockdown.  For school, we were assigned a lot of work and were pressured by our parents to get it down which I absolutely hated it because I don't like doing work in my free time because I enjoy relaxing.  Lockdown put down a lot of challenges for me physically and mentally and I have hated it ever since.

Now to end off this reflection I would like to say that this year is the worst year of my life.  Because of all the problems that I faced.  This was simply because I am an extrovert and enjoy playing sports,  these hobbies were destroyed when lockdown came in.  Although that happened there were some amazing things as well,  thank you for reading my reflection have a good day and bye.

Discovery Task

In Health we were set a task that required us to research a topic of our interest but in my case, it was Anabolic Steroids. Our set success criteria were to answer 5 questions and then write down the strategies. The topic that I chose was Anabolic Steroids. Photo of us working:

Firstly we had to find out our 5 big questions. Once we had our 5 BIG questions we gave our paragraph answers. From there we had to create a source that shows off our learning. We chose to make/create a Kahoot we chose to do this because it is easy and it is fun to use. Screenshot of the plan:

It was challenging when we were trying to find out our 5 big question answers. I coped with the challenge by researching harder and trying to simplify it into an easier way to understand it. I worked well with others because we split the workup. Next time I will talk more so we can get the work done even faster. I am really proud of how much work I have done.

Challenge charts

So today we have been learning about challenge charts.  We had to write down a challenge that one of the characters had faced.  This meant that we had to explain in detail the challenge and how they reacted to it.  I chose to focus on The 'Other' Mother and Coraline.  This was because they were the easiest to talk about.

Heart Dissection - Hur2

 What are we learning about?

We learnt about the circulatory system.  Basically, everything to do with our heart.  How it cycles and pumps blood into your body.

Why are we dissecting a heart?

We dissected the heart to get a physical view on the valve, verticle, parts of the arteries.  We had to learn what was inside and how it looked.

What are the parts that we saw?

We saw the valve, verticle, parts of the arteries.

Did you enjoy the dissection?

Yes because I as male enjoy doing a lot practical stuff.

Daylight Savings - Wanaga

Research and answer the following questions about Daylight Saving NZ in a blog post

  1. When does Daylight Saving happen each year in New Zealand?

Daylight savings start on 27 of September and finishes on April the 4

  1. What year did it start in NZ?

It started in 1972

  1. Research and answer the following questions about Daylight Saving NZ in a blog post

  2. Why was Daylight Saving started? Write at least 2 sentences to answer this question.

It started to change summer to spring.  This lets the sun out more in the evening than in the morning.

  1. Read the following article and write a paragraph (3-8 sentences) on whether or not you think that Daylight Saving should continue in New Zealand.

I reckon daylight savings should continue because it is good for the people to stay up an extra hour.  This is good because people have an extra hour to do what they want to do.  But the bad thing is that it may be hard for you to get into the routine to wake up an hour earlier.  This may also be bad for the creatures/animals, take cows for example, you milk cows every day at the same time then bam you start doing it an hour earlier for daylight savings cows do not like this.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/107348361/times-up-should-we-end-daylight-saving-in-new-zealand

  1. Write 3 tips to help others adjust to Daylight Saving.

  1. Start sleeping a hour earlier so you can adapt earlier

  2. Avoid drinking and alcohol

  3. Don’t take long sleeps

Lighting and Colour

First View on the 'Real World'

When I took my first look at the real world I instantly felt a sense of boredom, this is because of the lighting of the real world.  This is mainly because of the dull setting.  For instance the lighting inside the 'Pink Palace.' It was very plain as if nothing really popped out but Coraline.  I think that it was used like this because they want you to mainly think that which in my opinion was very clever.

First view on the 'Other World'

When Coraline went into the other world we felt a sense of welcoming and warmth.  This was mainly because of the spectacular colours that immaculately showed what the director was trying to present.  When I say 'warmth' I mean welcoming colours.  There was a scene where the garden from the other world was portraited with a whole bunch of unnatural and artificial colours.

After the button eyes

After the scene of the 'other' mother trying to get Coraline's eyes the other world changes.  The place starts to show its original glow.  This is done when the lights start to dim and show off the lime green.  This gives off the disgusting feel.  Then the other mother starts to change.

Real World after the resolution

When we come back to the real world the other place starts to glow.  They start working on the garden and it shows off more natural light which gives us a sense of love and affection.  At this scene, nothing really seems dull or out of place but everything feels amazing.

What makes a leader?

Last Wednesday all year 9's from Riroriro had to write and make a video about what makes and creates a leader.  First, we had to write down the key aspects of a leader.  After we added our values we then had to make a video saying what makes a great leader and how we inspire to be a leader.

In Conclusion, I have refreshed my mind and reflected back on what I think a leader is.  This is just a way to point you to be a great leader.  What values do you think makes a great leader/role model?

Theme Guide Booklet - Coraline

 Looks can be deceiving

‘Looks can be deceiving’ is shown perfectly by the main character, the other mother.  She starts off sweet and kind, basically giving a warm and welcoming feel.  But throughout the movie the other mother starts acting a bit weird and always asks for buttons.  It starts to change her looks which then finishes off with her looking like a demonic and unhuman like figure with needles for hands.

Be grateful for what you have

The best person to describe this theme is Coraline. She starts off by complaining about the house and always talking about how boring and annoying it is.  So one night when she found the mysterious tunnel she was welcomed to the other mother.  She loved her and what she did for Coraline,  which led her to forget about her biological mother.  This made her ungrateful about her real mother.

The power of choice

The power of choice is superbly shown by Coraline again.  The simple/easy choices she made kept on leading up to such huge consequences.

Instrument Evaluation

 1. We have learnt about the Ukelele, Piano, Guitar.

2.

The one that I enjoyed the most is the piano.  That is because it is simple and very easy to learn.

3.

Guitar because I was struggling to play the right chords.

4.

I am going to focus on the piano and learn funny and entertaining music to play.  I wanna be able to play at least one minute of my favourite instruments.

Language of film

 Film Language

What am I learning?

I am learning to identify the different language used in the creation explaining to you what terms are used in film making.  For example Body Language, Make-up, Colour, Lighting, and so on...  This will basically be a dictionary specifically for the art of film.

Body Language: Used to identify characters feelings

Costumes: Used to create a character’s personality

Hairstyles: Just like costumes it brings out a character’s personality

Make-Up: Used to change the look and bring out a personality of a

set character

Colour: Used to set the mood of a set Red could mean angry and

Blue could mean Sad

Lighting: Also used to set a mood and makes something important

stand out more than

other things

Props: Things used in scenes to make it more interactive

Setting: Used often to continue stories or describe surroundings

Dialogue: To increase the plot or share something new about

a character

Sound Effects: Used to create a mood so the audience can sympathize

Music: It is used to set a mood for the scene

Silence: Used to make it scene more serious or scary in a way

Symbols: A object used to represent an idea

Special Effects: Used to make the film look more people realistic

How does this work show my learning?

It represents my version and how I understand the language of which directors/filmmakers use.  This is an easier explanation.

What am I wondering about the result of my learning?

Hands

How does your hand works and what are the parts?

Bones:

There are 27 bones in your hand:
1. 8 bones in your wrist
2. 5 bones in your palms
3. 13 bones for your fingers and thumb(3 in each finger)

Tendons

What is a tendon? A tendon is a band of connective tissue that connects the muscles of the forearm bone to the phalanges which let your fingers move up and down.  This means that there are long strips of tendons that start at the tip of your finger and go all the way down to the muscle in your forearm. So your fingers only move when your finger muscle tenses.

Muscles

The muscles in your hand are Thumb Muscles, Palmar Muscles, and Little Finger Muscles.  But the main muscles that you use to move your fingers are the ones in your forearm that are called Flexor Digitorum Profundus.  This muscle is what they mainly use to control the tendons.  It does this by contracting and relaxing.  That is what makes your fingers move.

Ligaments

The Ligements in your hand make sure that your hands are moving the right way.  Like your fingers, it can only move back and forth.  It cannot move side to side, that is what our ligaments are for.  Otherwise, our fingers will be moving like jelly.

The Guitar

What is challenging for me to play the guitar?

It is hard for me to play because I can't move from one chord to another.

What is the difference between guitar and ukelele?

The number of strings is different.  Also the sound it quite different as well that is why you need to play the instrument properly.

Which one is better/easier for you to play?

The ukelele because its smaller.

Pu rere

For two periods we have worked on a Pu Rerehu.  This is a device that makes very cool and unique sounds.  We had started off with a piece of wood 200 millimetres long by 50 millimetres wide.  We started by sanding it down and then shaping it to what we need.  My work:

When I first heard about it I thought that it was like a car.  If I were to do it again I would try and change the shape so that it would look more unique and add patterns.

Algebra In Science

In hurumanu, I have been working on Algebra.  Our task today was to create a slideshow of algebra in science hence the title "Algebra In Science."  We learnt so much during the 13 weeks given, here is a fragment of my knowledge which I gained through Hurumanu 5.

I learnt the algorithm of velocity.  I presented this in the slide show and why this algorithm works.  I explained why and how with data.

Piano Blog post

Where was the piano invented and by who?

The invention of the piano is credited to Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655–1731) of Padua, Italy, who was employed by Ferdinando de' Medici, Grand Prince of Tuscany, as the Keeper of the Instruments.

What did the first piano look like?

The Piano: The Pianofortes of Bartolomeo Cristofori (1655–1731 ...

What is the difference between a Piano and a Keyboard?

One can make different sounds and the other you cannot.  Because the keyboard can make unique sounds.

What have you enjoyed about learning the piano/keyboard, what have you enjoyed?

I enjoyed some of my favourite music produced on piano.

Lemon Power

Lemon Power

Voltage:

Voltage is the pressure from an electrical circuit's power source that pushes charged electrons (current) through a conducting loop, enabling them to do work such as illuminating light. In brief, voltage = pressure, and it is measured in volts (V).

Current

An electric current is a flow of electric charge in a circuit. More specifically, the electric current is the rate of charge flow past a given point in an electric circuit. The charge can be negatively charged electrons or positive charge carriers including protons, positive ions or holes.

Aim:

To create voltage out of a lemon.

Method:

  • Roll the lemon out so the inside is liquidy
  • Stick a piece of zinc and copper into the lemon
  • Connect the lemon up to a voltmeter

Results:

Discussion:
When we rolled the lemon we made the inside liquidy.  We tried it with one lemon then we moved it to a whole bunch of lemons.  When we rolled it we made a whole lot of acidic acid inside the lemon.  This was then converted to a voltage.  When we connected all the lemons which made 2.3 voltage.

Conclusion:
This was fun and I had learnt how lemons have voltage.  This was a fun and different experience.  I would like to do this again and when I do I would want to try it with a different fruit.  To see which fruit has the most voltage. :)

What we did in Hur6...

So in Power To The People, we have been trying to make our own political party and try to create a difference in our society within our classes.  I will be keeping you updated with our progression in this class.  So here is my first recording of what I have done today:

Today we have confirmed who is in our group.  In my group, I have Megan, Sofia, Kalea and I.  We are going to create more solutions for us to help the community the best way possible.  We have successfully elected Sofia as our leader.  Because we feel as a group that she has way better potential than all of us in making a persuasive speech. We have come up with the logo, and are now trying to find a catchy slogan.

What are your top 3 strengths?

These are my top 3 strengths...

Gratitude
To show gratitude is to be grateful for the little things in life that others may look down on(e.g Clothes, shoes).  I expected that I would get Gratitude as my no. 1 strength.  I expected it because my parents had taught me to.  Every time I get money or any sort of currency from my parents I always say “Thank you” to them because I do not get money often.  It is important to have because it builds on your character and what you will be known as.
  • Bravery
I like getting into the prickly zone… which means that I get out of my comfort zone and try something new.  I did not expect this because I normally like doing the same things, but when I try something new I normally enjoy it.  Last term I had performed as one of the main boys in Kapa Haka, I was unsure of my decision but was happy that it was my choice.  This is an important characteristic to have in life because it gets you to try and do new things that you may enjoy more.
  • Creativity
I find inspiration from others and create my own unique ideas from it.  I did not expect this because I initially thought that my mind isn’t that great.    Creativity is an important skill to have because it can give you more than one possible outcome from a problem.

Genre Research

Kia Ora and welcome to my blog, I will be showing the research that I have been doing for the past couple weeks.  We had to look and understand a certain genre and then present it to the classroom.  In our case we did R&B.  Here is my work:

My Reflection on Music

Kia Ora and welcome to my blog, today I will be giving you my reflection on Music. I will be answering a few questions, sum up, what I had done.

What instrument did you choose and why?
I had chosen the piano,  I chose it because I was always fascinated by how to play the piano.  Also, most of my favourite music can also be played on a piano.

What song did you choose to learn and why?
In my case, I learnt how to play Married Life of the movie Up.  I chose this iconic song because you can play it fast which makes the music sound happy or play it slow and change the whole mood of the song to a sad version.

What was challenging with this piece and why?
For me, the challenging part was getting the left hand down for the backup music.  I was always used to doing everything with my right hand that when I had started to use my left hand I started to struggle.

Were you happy with the final recording/performance? Why?
I was exhausted by in the end I got the result that I am proud and happy with.  Now I can show off my skills on any piano I use/play with.

What could you change about your performance if you could do it again?
I would change the speed,  I would do the whole beat a little bit faster but I found it a little to complex for me.  I did the slow part of the song at the best of my ability.

Were you happy with your overall grade?
I personally think that I did a little bit better.  But it is alright due to the fact that could have added more.  I will try and learn what I have done wrong.  Although I can get some things better I can learn from it and do better.

Have you enjoyed your music semester?
I have had a blast,  being able to work with an amazing teacher who supported me and helped me understand piece by piece how to play the piano.  Also, the classmates who were always stunned by how I progressed.  I am very thankful for the opportunity to work with a Keyboard/Piano and hopefully, I can do it again next year.

General knowledge on sports

Hello and welcome to my blog I will be telling you some fun and interesting facts about different sports.  Hope you may learn something from this.  Maybe even tell your parents what you have learnt well let's get into it:

Who created basketball and what was his occupation?
James Naismith invented the sport basketball for his classroom.  He played it as a fun P.E game and luckily it got popular very quickly.

Where and when did the word Marathon originate?
Ancient Greece was where it came from.  Apparently, the Athenians and the Persians had a huge battle.  Then one of the soldiers had come back to call out triumph for one of the People and then had dropped dead when he had reached and had told them the good news.  Which then somehow led them to think that is how the word Marathon came from.

Who created the Modern Olympics?
Baron Pierre De Coubertin was the man who had created the modern Olympics (According to google search)

Thank you for reading my work have a great day and I hope that you have learnt something.

States of matter

For science, I have studied what the different states of matter are and how they are made.  I also had to take a quick look at what fire is.  Is fire a Solid, Liquid, Gas or Plasma.  I struggled with this.   Overall this was a great experience and I would love to do this again.  Here is my work:

ICT

Today I had learned about how to use formulas in Google Sheets.  I learned how to create equations by formulas.  As you can see at the top is my formula and that I have used the multiply symbol.  Here is the link to the site I have used.

The way I did the formula is by using the top and side of the sheet to add, multiply, divide and subtract.  So all you have to do is right one of these symbols. Add + , Subtract -, Divide/ and multiply *.  By using these codes you will be able to create your own equations.

Home Exercising

For the past 3 weeks or so I have been trying to keep my fitness up by going for runs, Doing weights, having a normal workout routine with and weights and a bit more. I am trying to work out so that when I get back into the sport I will be fully prepared.

Although I am trying to keep fit I am also struggling due to temptation.  I cannot keep focused on a healthy diet if I continue eating ice cream, Chips, Chicken nuggets, etc.  So for the next couple of weeks, I am going to set myself a challenge...

My challenge for the next couple of weeks is to lose 5 - 10 kg.  This will mean that I will be having to make sure that A, I will be keeping to a healthy diet B, I will be exercising daily and C making sure that I keep track.

I would like to finish off with thank you for reading my blogpost and please comment on what you like or didn't.  I would also like you to challenge yourself to do 3 physical things outside or inside a week.  Thank you and bye.

The Lighthouse

Today I watched a short film about a lighthouse and its keeper.  After I had watched the video we were given questions. Here is the link to the video.

Has there been a time when you wanted to away from other people? Why did you feel like that?

I like to think of myself as a very calm individual and I do not get angry that many times or ever.  I get angry if I keep getting annoyed.  Like a cup of water if you keep filling the cup it will eventually overflow.  So if someone keeps annoying me my anger will keep building and eventually put me in an unsettling mood.  When I get put into this type of anger I want to be isolated from the people around so I can calm down.

Why do people want to be alone? Are they happy?

People want to be alone for a different range of reasons.  They may want to be alone because Reflecting, calming down, me time and so much more.  They can happy it really depends on their mood or the reason they want to be alone.  They could be happy to be alone to just appreciate things or they could be sad by being depressed.

What happened in his past that made him dislike bringing people around? Why does he live alone at the Lighthouse? How does he feel?  Create a backstory for the Lighthouse Keeper

It may not seem like it but John (The lighthouse keeper)  was once a social person.  He enjoyed the people around him.  He always thought of it as Him and his daughter against the world.  He was like this until his daughter got sick.  Her daughter was diagnosed with Humanity Diclosure Syndrome (Made up)  this is when she can't be around people.  People had been coming and visiting her in the hospital but little did they know that it really is making it worse.    But he didn't know about this until it was too late.  Once he had found out about this he was angry with everyone and blamed them for his daughter's death.  He then isolated himself from everyone.  So he permanently moved into the lighthouse to be away from everyone and to forever grieving over his daughter's death.

Bullying (Physical and Cyber)

Today I was doing some research on bullying,  I looked at different kinds of bullying.  I looked at a site and learnt that there are Physical, Verbal, Social and Cyberbullying.  All of these are problems in our youth to this day.  But I will be talking to you about Physical and Cyberbullying...

What is Physical bullying?  Normally when you are physically bullying there is an imbalance of power.  For example strength, the bully will be more built or more solid than the victim, therefore, creating an imbalance of power.  This is one of the main aspects of bullying because this is what bullying is mainly known for.  Someone is afraid of doing something might they get harmed.  It can be as constantly being hitting, kicking, shoving, spitting and many more over and over again.  So it isn't a one-off.

What is Cyberbullying?  'Cyberbullying' is basically a fancy word for online bullying.  Although they may have the same traits as 'original' bullying it is a bit different.  Because there could be an imbalance of power regardless of age, strength or popularity.  This is because it is the use of technology.  The use of sending rude messages or pictures are more common.  This also means that could have never met they could have so private data and be able to blackmail or threat the victim.  This is an actual issue and there has been many cases of cyberbullying.

In conclusion, I have learnt that there are a whole bunch of ways that you can be bullied.  All I can say is don't let it get to you and if there is an issue talk about it with an adult.  It is not okay to have this in your own mind so talk about this to a person that you can trust and come up with solutions.

Depression

Kia Ora my name is Lasa and I am gong to talk to you about depression.  Depression is a real problem in our society.  If you have any problems or are depressed please tell your parents or your caregivers.  You can also contact the youth line.

If you contact the youthline they will talk with you and listen.  They will want to hear out your problem.  They care about your mental health because of your Taha Hinengaro.  They like listening and they will give you advice.  This will encourage you to be a better person.

They will talk with you and come up with new and amazing things to help be a better you. They care about you more about themselves.  Depression is a huge problem in our society and support may be what you need to stop it.

If you still go to school you may talk with your teacher, counseller or even just a friend.  I would like to leave this with have a great day and people do care.  You are important, have a great day and take care.

Separating a mixture using evaporation

Aim:
Find out how to use evaporation

Hypothesis:
I think the copper sulfate will start to evaporate due to the heat.

Equipment:
Copper Sulfate, 250ml Beaker, Heat Proof Mat, Evaporation Basin, Element

Method
1. Set up element
2. Add 100ml of hot water to the beaker and place on the element
3. Add copper sulfate to the evaporating basin until it is quarter full
4. Carefully, place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker
5. Turn element on to 8
6. Heat the solution until most of the solvent has been evaporated and crystals of solute are forming.
7. Turn off the element - careful not to touch as will be hot for a long time

Observation
The copper sulfate is starting to evaporate and the water is boiling.  It is starting to condense.  Change the copper sulfate to gas and leave the rest as a solid.

Discussion:
The copper sulfate starts to evaporate because of the heat caused by the water on the element.  The solvent will start to evaporate then leave the solute.  This is happing because the h2O is boiling which is causing a lot of heat caused by the steam from the h2O.   Then it starts to condense.

Evaluation:
This experiment was fun and I really enjoyed it.  For the first time, we got to use an element. The outcome was unique and I liked it.

Taha Wairua - Kindness

Kia Ora my fellow friends,  today I am going to be talking about the meanings of Taha Wairua and Kindness.  I would like too start off by talking about Taha Wairua.

What does Taha Wairua mean?
Taha Wairua is keeping your spiritual well being healthy.  How do you keep your spiritual well being healthy?  You have to think about Church/Religion or you can worry about your cultural beliefs.  This could be as simple as going to community activities.

What did I do to show kindness?
For my RAK I write down what can I do to show kindness or help out in the family and this is what I wrote... In Health we are learning about Wellbeing. We are looking at random acts of kindness. Today I am carrying out a random act of kindness.  I would like to clean up the kitchen and the lounge to help out the family. Also help my sister when she is in need when cleaning up.

In conclusion I would like to say that if you want to keep healthy try be more kind everyday. Also attend more culture activities. Thank you and bye. :)

Practice

In P.E today we worked on discus and high jump.  We learnt new and different ways to do the athletic item.

In the high jump, we practised fosberry jump.  When I tried to do the jump technique I was struggling because I am used to jumping sideways.  I tried and tried but I continuously failed.  Although I failed I continued to try.

In Discus, we learnt how to throw it.  I was naturally good at it so I always threw the furthest.  Although I was good at discus, I kept on challenging myself to get better.  Because I knew the competition within canterbury.
